How do I prevent loss due to ransomware?2022-04-29T15:12:11+00:00

With ransomware on the rise, it’s more important than ever to have a quality off-site backup. While it can be expensive, think of it as an insurance policy that includes many other benefits such as protection against fire, theft or other unforeseen events. It can also be much more expensive in time and money to recover the lost data.

As always, you should also make sure your operating system and other software, including anti-virus, is up to date. Also, do not click on suspicious links. If you are unsure, go directly to the source.

How do I deal with cyber security concerns?2023-08-16T18:47:42+00:00

You may have noticed the increased frequency of cyber security warnings. While those targets will likely be bigger fish such as large companies or sectors of industry, it’s still important to keep your personal bits and bytes secure.

At the very least, part of your digital cleaning routine should include changing your passwords. Yes, PASSWORDS. You really should not have the same one everywhere. Here is a great password generator, as recommended by our friend and web designer at Your Page Today.

While a strong set of passwords is great, you should take it to the next level by enabling multi-factor or two-factor authentication whenever possible. Often this involves receiving a six-digit code via text as another layer of security to help verify you are the account owner. There are other options depending on the website or app capabilities.

Backing up files can also be a good thing to get into if you haven’t been doing so already. Sure, you could get a decent external hard drive at Best Buy; however, an off-site solution allows for additional security in case of fire, theft or other unforeseen events.

Another task worth considering is to freeze your credit reports:
Equifax: 1-800-685-1111 | TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872 | Experian: 1-888-397-3742

As always, you should also make sure your operating system and other software, including anti-virus, is up to date, If your anti-virus is hogging valuable system resources or you don’t have one, and/or need a backup solution contact us!

Should I be using Windows 10 or Windows 11?2022-09-28T16:12:13+00:00

Well … it’s complicated. For the most part that is up to you, your computing needs, and your hardware. Unless there is a pressing need, or curiosity, most users won’t need to make the switch on their current PCs for some time; however, if you have an older system keep in mind, per Microsoft’s Modern Lifecyle Policy, “Microsoft will continue to support at least one Windows 10 release until October 14, 2025.”

With that said, if you are running Windows 10, be sure to update on a regular basis. There are several releases that have expired, including Windows 10 20H2 which ended on May 10, 2022. Windows 10 21H1 ends on December 13, 2022 and Windows 10 21H2 ends on June 13, 2023. If you have 20H2 or earlier, you should update immediately.

Also worth noting, Windows 8.1 is the only other version that is currently being supported, at least until January 10, 2023, with security and other updates. Windows XP and Windows 7 holdouts should consider upgrading as soon as possible.

My screen is cracked and my device is out of warranty what should I do?2022-03-18T15:14:52+00:00

Accidents happen and often they don’t occur when you’re in the market for a new device. You could be anywhere from just out of warranty to having it so long you would be forced to upgrade. Instead, bring it to the office for a consultation. Not only can you save money with a repair, you can save the time, energy and effort that goes into getting things back on track.

How do I make sure my PC is secure?2022-03-31T14:37:30+00:00

There are several popular antivirus options on the market today; however, many tend to slow you and your system down. That is why all of our new computers include a business-level antivirus called CloudCare. As suggested by the name, it does most of the processing in the cloud so it frees up your computer resources. How should I clean in and around my computer tower?2022-03-11T16:39:11+00:00

Making sure you have a clean computer is a very important but an often missed step. Because your computer has fans running internally to move the warm air out it pulls dust in with the airflow.   Much of this dust tends to gather around the heatsink  (metal fins that draw heat away from your processor), or in the ports around the power supply. Never use a vacuum cleaner in or around your tower.  To clean the dust out of your tower, use a can of compressed air.  A vacuum cleaner creates static electricity which does not work well near a computer.

Why is my computer running slower than it was when I bought it?2022-03-11T16:38:12+00:00

Although there could be many answers to this question, one reason could be Spyware and/or Malware.  Each of these can download as you are surfing through the internet.  When these files are not deleted and left in your computer can gradually take up internet bandwidth as well as processor speed eventually leaving your computer virtually unusable.

A second reason is your computer may not have enough RAM memory to handle the intense graphics that the internet contains.  Graphics on the internet can easily use up all your RAM memory if your computer does not have a sufficient amount.   When this happens your computer will drastically slow down.

What can I add to my computer to make it run faster?2022-03-11T16:36:46+00:00

The year your computer was manufactured plays a large part as to what can be done. Depending on when your computer was manufactured there may be little to nothing that is worth paying to try to speed up the system. But if it is not too old, then adding RAM if it is possible is usually the cheapest, most effective way to speed up your computer system.
